HUNGARY - 1100 YEARS IN THE HEART OF EUROPE
Their country is less than 100.000 square km, their language is not spoken anywhere else, their folk songs do not resemble those of anyone else. Yet the Hungarian people have been living in the centre of Europe for more than 1100 years. Despite a history of varying fortunes which devastated both its people and its cultural assets and treasures, Hungary retains a valuable cultural and environmental heritage, which people come from all parts of the world to enjoy.
The capital city, Budapest, "Pearl of the Danube", with its wonderful panorama, has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. After Iceland, this is where the world's largest quantity of surface thermal water can be found: the healing waters of several hundred springs help thousands of people recover their health. The largest lake in Central Europe, Lake Balaton, is a paradise for families with small children, for yachtsmen and for lovers of the beach.
